The Lafourche Parish School Board is offering a second chance for those who have missed out on their secondary education.

Board spokesman Floyd Benoit said the Lafourche Parish School Board Adult Education Program is offering residents 17 and older who are no longer enrolled in the system a variety of programs to help improve their education.

Benoit said the programs, which are provided at no charge, include literacy training, pre-employment and work maturity skills, basic skills upgrading, GED preparation, computer skills, English as a Second Language and Even Start.

Benoit said the GED program prepares students to take the state test for a Graduate Equivalent Diploma.

Through the Even Start Program, parents and children study together.

Even Start is a recently implemented program in Lafourche Parish that allows parents and their children to become educated at the same time.

On one side of the building, infants and toddlers are playing and learning through activities while their parents are at another classroom working toward their GEDs.

Officials said the program, which began in Lafourche in 2015, is a collaboration between the School Board, special education, Title I and food service programs. It offers on-site childcare with restrictions.

Benoit said the program serves children from birth to seven years of age and their families at three sites throughout the parish.

The program operates a site at The Opportunity Place South Campus in Cutoff, the T.O.P. Central Campus behind Central Lafourche High School and at the T.O.P. North Campus in the old L.T. School on La. 308.

Benoit said the services are offered Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and on Monday and Tuesday 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the three sites.

For more information about the programs or to register for any of the services provided, people can call the site nearest to them. In Thibodaux, the number is 447-5656. In the central area, call 532-3114, and in South Lafourche, call 632-3169.
